26-Year-Old Hockey Player Dies During Pro Game
Wow… this is really sad news. Darcy Robinson, a 26-year-old hockey player from Kamloops, B.C., collapsed on the ice Thursday during a professional hockey league game in Italy and died.
His teammates at the Asiago Hockey Club said they are shocked by what they saw.
The club’s athletic director, Rafaele Tendi, said Robinson, who had just started his third season with the club, was in good spirits and appeared to be in good health before the game.
“He was on his own, not so far from our net,” Tendi told CBC News during a phone interview Friday. “He fell on the ice. The first thing I thought was it was something with his knee.”
Robinson, a defenceman, mysteriously collapsed three minutes into the first period of the game and was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Tendi said.
The cause of his death is not yet known. Italian officials said they first have to complete an autopsy.
Robinson played with six teams in the North American minor leagues before transferring to Asiago in 2005. He held dual Canadian-Italian citizenship and was born in Kamloops.
Peter Doyle, his former coach in Kamloops, said Robinson was a “fierce competitor” who skated well and loved to win.
Robinson’s brother, Daniel, said he had a kind heart. “He’s a pretty strong player on the ice, but he was a big softie off the ice - a big, teddy-bear-type deal.”
Andrew Milne, an assistant coach with the Kamloops Blazers who played with Robinson as a junior player, said his friend’s sudden passing is hard to believe.
“I met him again this summer, and I would consider him to have been in peak physical condition,” Milne said.
Robinson’s parents have flown to Italy to bring their son’s body home.
Meanwhile, the Kamloops Minor Hockey Association will plan a tribute to Robinson.
