A Fresh Start for the Blackhawks?
Within the NHL’s ownership cabal, the Chicago Blackhawks’ Bill Wirtz is an anomaly. At a time when the dollars flowing and television deals are pursued at any cost - or free if you’re NBC - Wirtz has operated like a penny-pinching dinosaur. In the process, he has destroyed a once-proud franchise and driven away players such as Bobby Hull, Jeremy Roenick and Chris Chelios. There is good news, however, as Wirtz is apparently ready to sell the team after losing $31-million this past season and $191-million over the past decade. It’s shocking to see far the ‘Hawks have tumbled in recent years. Their teams have been, at best, mediocre; attendance at the new United Centre has come nowhere close to the level of the Chicago Stadium (and been a long, sad way from the raucous atmosphere as well). In a nutshell, NHL hockey has become a joke in North America’s third-largest city. See ya, Bill.
