A Salary Standard?

Andrei Markov, a steady but unspectacular defenseman, has signed a four-year, $23-million contract to stay with the Montreal Canadians. Last year, Markov had six goals and 43 assists in 77 games. The deal, which materialized five weeks before Markov was to become an unrestricted free agent, begs the question: is a steady, 29-year-old defenseman now worth $5.75-million? If Markov is worth $5.75-million, then it makes the deals the Maple Leafs signed last year with Brian McCabe and Pavel Kubina seems fairly reasonable.
