Atlanta Thrashers Take Recchi From Waivers
Nice! Mark Recchi, 39, doesn’t have to look into retirement options just yet, lol.
The Atlanta Thrashers have added the veteran player to their lineup. He had been put on waivers by the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday. I have to admit, I wasn’t sure anyone was going to take him but now the Thrashers can have the "two-time Stanley Cup champion for half his $1.75-million US contract."
He is expected to participate in a team practice on Tuesday.
Penguins coach, Michel Therrien, had some ouchy things to say following Recchi’s placement on the team’s AHL affiliate after scoring two goals and eight points in 19 games this season. First, he said that Pens’ younger players "deserved more ice time than Recchi." Then Therrien said:
"We believe we gave him an opportunity," Therrien said of Recchi, a native of Kamloops, B.C. "It didn’t work out."
Recchi has 510 goals and 1,341 points in 1,357 career NHL regular-season games for the Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers, Montreal Canadiens and Carolina Hurricanes.
Well, we’ll see how it goes when Recchi meets his former teammates when the Penguins visit Atlanta on January 12th.
