Attendance Woes in the U.S.
As much as the NHL likes to count ticket giveaways as “attendance”, there is little doubt many NHL teams south of the border (Tampa, Florida, Nashville, Washington, Atlanta) are struggling to attract people. Nashville, for example, has one of the best teams in the league yet it couldn’t get a sell out until Peter Forsberg’s first game following the big trade with Philadelphia. Sometimes, the NHL reminds me of someone who takes great pleasure in banging their head against a wall: despite an insistence on making the game work in the U.S., the truth of the matter is it only works well in a small number of markets. And as much as the NHL keeps talking about places such as Seattle, Portland, Las Vegas, Kansas City and Oklahoma City as potential markets, it would be better off shrinking the number of teams instead. This would probably lead to a better product on the ice and, hopefully, more people in the stands.
