Balsillie Signs Deal with Hamilton
If Jim Balsillie intends to move the Nashville Predators out of Tennessee, it appears his may already be in motion. Balsillie has signed a deal with Copps Coliseum in Hamilton that re-activated an exclusive lease that could him him 100% of the revenue from Copps, naming rights, and possibly the rights to run Hamilton Place and the downtown convention centre. Hamilton Mayor Fred Eisenberger didn’t help Balsillie’s “we’re not moving the Predators” argument by suggestion that “(Balsillie) has assured me that he wants to secure a team and he is interested in bringing it to Hamilton. Meanwhile, Balsillie’s lawyer - clearly in defensive mode - said the agreement is “simply a contingency plan in the unlikely event that the Predators arena lease terminates prior to its normal course expiration”. The bottom line is Balsillie’s a smart guy. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that hockey in Nashville doesn’t work financially because you can’t get enough fans to attend games, and there’s little corporate support. Meanwhile, a team in Hamilton or Waterloo would probably play to a packed house with corporate sponsors scrambling to be part of a second NHL franchise in southern Ontario.
