Bruins’ Bergeron Taken to Hospital

Boston BruinsPatrice Bergeron was taken to the hospital after a hit during their 2-1 loss to the visiting Philadelphia Flyers Saturday afternoon.

Bergeron, 22, was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was treated for a concussion and a broken nose. He was hit by Flyers defenceman Randy Jones late in the first period. Bergeron fell to the ice and lay motionless on his back after Jones drove his head into the end boards with his forearm.

Tests didn’t show any other serious injuries to Bergeron’s head or neck, and he was awake and able to move all his limbs, Zarins said.

“Words can’t express the way I feel right now,” Jones, 26, said in a statement released by the Flyers.

“I am very apologetic for the hit and what I did. It wasn’t intentional, it’s something I have never done before, it is not part of my character.

“I’m extremely sorry, I hope he does OK and everything works out for him. I wish him nothing but the best in his recovery.”

Jones was assessed a five-minute major and game misconduct.

Bruins coach Claude Julien called it “a dirty hit.”

“I’m not saying he’s a dirty player, all I’m saying is it was a dirty hit. We’ll just have to let the league take care of it … and hopefully they will,” Julien said.

“This is the third major incident that club’s had in 10 games. It’s something that has to be addressed there.”

Flyers prospect Steve Downie was suspended 20 games after a hit to the head of Ottawa Senators forward Dean McAmmond in an exhibition contest. Then on Oct. 10 in Vancouver,Jesse Boulerice laid a vicious cross-check to the mouth of Canucks centre Ryan Kesler that resulted in a 25-game suspension.

Honestly, when is this going to stop? The Flyers just dump players as soon as they get penalized for a hit like this but when is the hockey club going to start taking responsibility? It’s ridiculous to just keep blaming the players. Yeah, they are at fault but something is definitely going on with the Flyers.

2 opinions for Bruins’ Bergeron Taken to Hospital

I am glad Bergeron did not sustain anything worse than he got but it was still very bad.

As for Randy Jones, he will face punishment from the league. I know he didn’t intend for this type of hit, he was just going to the boards and Bergeron had slowed down to get to the puck. Jones’ timing was way off. The intent was not there, but he should still take his punishment.

As for the previous two, there was intent. Downie’s was definitely but Boulerice, he didn’t mean to hit the head, just the shoulders. His hit was still bad and there was intent to do harm, not as much as what happened. He still should not have gone back away from the play to deliver what he intended to do, which became much worse than he intended.

Downie and Boulerice both have histories. The Flyers should never have picked them up, but after Anaheim’s win last year and their physical play, that only made the rest of the league build up on muscle. The Flyers were no different, except, they have a history and their fans love it.

If I’m not mistaken, though, didn’t Brashear play for the Flyers? It seems like they have a history of this type of thing.

I mean, I know Jones didn’t mean it but there’s got to be something going on in those dressing rooms. I just don’t think it’s a coincidence that this team has had so much trouble and it isn’t even a full month into the season.
