Buffalo Renews Numminen’s Contract

by Jeanne on August 13th, 2008

nhl-sabres218_61339 Veteran defenceman, Teppo Numminen, will be playing in the NHL for at least another year.  The Buffalo Sabres are paying him $1.1 million to stay on with the team after he was cleared to play by the Cleveland Clinic after having surgery to repair a heart valve.

“The number one reason was because we believe he can help our hockey club, and we felt strongly that we missed him last year,” general manager Darcy Regier said. “We missed his leadership and his play and his coolness.”

Apparently, the grievance he filed against the team back in November has been settled (he was upset that he was suspended without pay last September after his doctors determined that he needed heart surgery).  Do you think he deserved to get some or all of his $2.6-million salary?  He was only activate for that final week of last season but he did start practicing with the team (non-contact) in November.

Oh well.  Water under the bridge, I guess, since he wanted to stay with the team and they wanted to keep him…
