Calgary Flames Bring Cujo Back!

by Jeanne on January 14th, 2008

Curtis Joseph Whoa!  This one threw me off guard.  Curtis Joseph, the 40-year-old goalie who’s been out of the NHL this year is suddenly back in the game!  The Calgary Flames have signed the veteran netminder to a 1-year deal worth $1.5 million.  Since a little more than half of the season is already gone, he’ll earn about $650,000 for the rest of the year.

Joseph, who led Canada to a Spengler Cup title late last month, is one NHL victory shy of tying Terry Sawchuk for fourth all-time on the goalie career win list at 447.

Joseph went 18-31-2 with a 3.19 goals-against average and .893 save percentage with the Phoenix Coyotes last season.

He’s 446-341-95 in 913 NHL regular-season games with St. Louis, Edmonton, Toronto, Detroit and Phoenix.

The New York Rangers were also believed to be in the running for Joseph’s services before he ultimately decided to join with the Flames.

Since star goalie Miikka Kiprusoff has started 45 of 46 games this season (rookie Curtis McElhinney has only started once) it might be nice to have a more seasoned veteran as a backup between the pipes.

Yadda, yadda, yadda - what I really want to say is that I’m hoping CuJo scares the crap out of Kipper and gets his ass in gear.  Yes, I realize Kip must be tired but enough already - we’ve seen nary a shutout and his stats are really sad YET he was able to turn on the magic when the New Jersey Devils and superstar netminder, Marty Brodeur, rolled in to Calgary.  Don’t know what’s going on but I have a feeling we’re about to see some changes.  I’ll wait before I start praising coach Mike Keenan
