Colorado Avalanche Without Sakic and Smyth
This is not good for the Colorado Avalanche - Joe Sakic and Ryan Smyth could be out for more than just a few games.

Sakic hasn’t played in a game since enduring a groin injury on November 30th and hasn’t been able to skate at all since Saturday. "He knew it wasn’t right," coach Joel Quenneville said in the Post story. "We’ll know when it’s right when we put him back on the ice next time. That was his test, to kind of give him a baseline to figure out where he’s at. But he’s not ready to get out on the ice yet."

Smyth’s injury is a bit more of a mystery - no one is even sure how he got a neck injury that is so bad that even slight movements cause him severe pain. Apparently, he woke up with the pain on Wednesday morning. They are awaiting test results. "The Denver Post notes that the worst-case scenario is that Smyth suffered a herniated disc, and faces a lengthy rehabilitation period."
I really hope, for the Avs sake, that these two heal quickly. Before last night’s game, they were tied for first place (with the Minnesota Wild) in the Northwest division.
