Emery Makes Debut, Shines

Don’t hate me but I just don’t like Ray Emery. He’s a good goaltender and all but there’s something about the guy that just rubs me the wrong way, but I digress…
Anyway, the Ottawa Senators are probably happy that Emery “had the dubious honour of trying to replace one of the NHL’s hottest goaltenders on Saturday night and thankfully for the Ottawa Senators, he delivered.”
Emery turned away 31 shots and Christoph Schubert added two points as the Ottawa Senators earned a 4-1 win over the Florida Panthers at Scotiabank Place on Saturday night.
After helping the Senators to a Stanley Cup Final appearance last season, off-season wrist surgery prevented Emery from assuming his No. 1 position to start the year. But it opened the door for backup Martin Gerber, who has made the most of the opportunity by helping the Senators to a league-best 7-1-0 start.
Gerber entered Saturday’s contest leading the NHL in wins (6), was seventh in save percentage (.936) and ninth in goals-against average (2.13).
After a conditioning stint in the minors, Emery made his debut on Saturday and was forced to be on top of his game until Ottawa’s offence awoke in the third period.
“I thought the team played really well and I felt pretty good in there, kind of like I expected,” Emery said. “It’s a situation where I know the team is going to play well so I just have to play solid so it makes it easier to come back from an injury. It was a welcome change to get back in a game.”

Well, hopefully things will go well and the Sens will have two good goalies. Otherwise, it could be trouble… you never want to open the door for a backup goalie like Gerber. If Emery doesn’t play his cards right, he could end up being second best…
