Flames Get First Win of the Season!

by Jeanne on October 13th, 2007

Being the Calgary Flames fan that I am, I’ve been mildly disappointed but not scared by the lack of wins so fan this season. I also really like Marty Turco of the Dallas Stars so it was fun to play them tonight, no matter what!

The Flames posted an overtime victory over the Stars tonight with Matthew Lombardi scoring a pair of goals, including the winner at 3:20 of overtime.

Calgary had not won in the Lone Star State in eight previous visits, its last victory in Dallas coming on Dec. 14, 2001.

The Flames entered the contest as the only team in the NHL’s Western Conference without a victory, following a pres-season that saw the club win just one of eight contests.

After one-goal losses at home to the Flyers and Canucks, the Flames opened their current four-game road trip Wednesday with a 4-2 loss to Detroit.

…Down a goal, Lombardi tied the game with nine minutes left in the third and then notched the winner in the extra frame.

The teams traded first period goals, with Mike Modano tallying for Dallas at 4:27, and captain Jarome Iginla answering for Calgary with his first goal of the season, scoring on a wrist shot with 22 seconds left in the frame.

Modano’s goal moved him within four points of matching Phil Housley’s record for U.S.-born players. Modano’s one-timer was his first goal of the season, giving him 1,228 career points in his 1,243rd NHL game. Housley collected 1,232 points in 1,495 games.

Modano has 508 goals, the most for any U.S.-born player.

Niklas Hagman’s power-play marker midway through the second gave the Stars a 2-1 lead, but Calgary evened things up at 10:46 of the third when Lombardi’s shot slipped past Dallas goalie Marty Turco.

Calgary goalie Miikka Kiprusoff made 24 saves in the win.

The Flames continue their road trip tomorrow where they’ll visit the Nashville Predators.
