Gartner Quites, NHLPA in Disarray
The Saskin Affair continues to stink worse worse following the abrupt, but not surprising, resignation of Mike Gartner as the NHLPA’s president. Gartner had little choice but to walk away given he spent so much political capital defending Saskin from critics such as Trent Klatt and Chris Chelios. With Saskin increasingly looking like he might be fired “for cause” (which means the rest of his five-year, $10-million contract could be annulled), it is interesting to remember that Saskin was instrumental in reviving the NHLPA’s merchandising royalty programs, which had fallen into disrepair. In the process, he made the players a lot of money. In theory, he should have been a hero after Bob Goodenow resigned given NHLPA have learned to follow the almighty buck as well as NBA, NFL and MBA members. Saskin’s appointment, however, was flawed from the very beginning and what should have been a solid move turned into a disaster. It is interesting to see how little attention is being paid to the role played by Trevor Linden, who as the NHLPA’s president, gave Saskin his sweetheart contract with little input from other NHLPA members.
