Leafs Sign Toskala
If you’re Toronto Maple Leafs GM John Ferguson, what do you do with goaltender Andrew Raycroft now that you’ve signed Vesa Toskala to a two-year, $8-million contract extension?
After a medicore 2006/07 campaign, Raycroft’s stock is not great so trying to unload him and his $2-million/year salary could be a difficult task. Then again, $2-million for an NHL goaltender is pretty reasonable these days, particularly for someone who won the Calder Trophy a couple of years ago.
And if $2-million is reasonable, can you justify paying that to a back-up goaltender? If Toskala proves to be a stud who’s playing 60 to 70 games a year, then $2-million for a back-up goaltender makes no sense when you could get away with paying someone $500,000. That said, Ferguson has made his bed by trading for Raycroft and then Toskala over the past two years. If he can wiggle himself out of the Raycroft experiment, it would be quite the feat.
