Mike Keenan - Get Control Over the Calgary Flames, Please!

It’s been a full 24 hours and I’m still mad. No, I’m not mad, I’m pissed. I am completed ticked off about Calgary’s shameful loss last night. They were on a roll - a team that was notoriously bad on the road last season have won the last two road games and on their way to claiming a third - and they completely fell apart. I mean, poor Peter Budaj was pulled because the Flames scored on him 4 times while the Avs remained scoreless and then the game took a craptacular turn. It was so shocking that I barely had a voice left from screaming. Miikka Kiprusoff was solid and looking like he might have a chance at his first shutout of the season and the unthinkable happened - the Colorado Avalanche were AWARDED A GOAL not because of their skill but because the put bounced off the skate of Calgary Flames defenseman, Robyn Regehr, and into his own team’s net. Fine. That happens. It sucks but we can shake it off, right?
THEN (oh yeah, there’s a then) Colorado was given ANOTHER goal by one of Calgary’s players, again, off of a stupid skate.
The game just went downhill from there with Colorado tying the game and then winning in a shootout.
The icing on the cake? Ryan Smyth got the game-winning shootout goal and, because Calgary’s two “skate goals” were awarded to him, he got a hat trick!!!!!
FLAMES, GET IT TOGETHER! That was horrible. You could almost smell the defeated attitudes. If the Flames are going to have a chance at making the playoffs, Mike Keenan is going to have to bring out that iron first I keep hearing about.

I didn’t watch this game (generally, the only games I ever watch anymore are the Blues), but after reading this article it sounds like a third period that I definitely wouldn’t mind catching. This has to be the first time anyone’s ever managed to score three goals with one shot.

Sorry to hear that. For your sake. I remeber a while back when Brett Hull lefted a wrist shot from the blue line and it bounced off of the glass, hit the goalie in the back, and went in the net. Don’t think it won the game but I believe it got him a hat trick.

Jeanne is to the Flames as Jodie is to the Red Sox!

Jodie,
“If the Flames are going to have a chance at making the playoffs, …”
Uh, just a wee bit early in the season, to be worrying about playoffs ain’t it ? :)

Mike,
Were you talking to Jodie or to me (Jeanne)?
We are a little early in the season but the Flames are one of those teams that don’t tend to burst into action (at least not for the past couple years). When things go wrong for them early in the season (or even early in a game), you’ll see their defeatist attitudes come out. I’m hoping Keenan can nip this in the bud before it starts (again) because I saw it the other night…
Thanks for bringing me back to earth, though :)

Mike - I actually do think that it’s important for Keenan to tie his team together early, because it’ll matter later on, during the battle for playoff spots. I mean, you can’t just (as a coach) not try fix problems early and worry about it ’till playoff time. Deal with the problems now so that they can work on it for a longer amount of time.
Now is the time to get worried about it.

I think it would be interesting to see a season played with every team having NO COACHES at all, and see what the results would be.
The only real effect I can see a coach has, is who he puts on the ice against the opposing team, and even that I think is a very minor factor.
These guys have been playing hockey all their lives, they know how to practice, they know how to play the game.
The coach is just “showbusiness” IMO.
