Nashville’s Done like Dinner
Whether it’s next year or five years from now, the Nashville Predators will be leaving Tennessee. It’s just a matter of time after Craig Leopold conceded defeat by selling the team to Jim Balsillie. There’s no other conclusion after Leopold made this concession:
“I have come to the conclusion that I cannot make it work here. As hard as we tried and as good a team as we had - I mean, we are one of the elite teams in this league, and we [have] by far the lowest revenue. It doesn’t work”.
If this doesn’t symbolize the death of NHL hockey in Nashville, I don’t know what else does. As Bruce Arthur of the National Post made clear in a column today, Balsillie’s purchase of the Predators could mark the beginning of the end of NHL domo Gary Bettman’s dream of establishing hockey in the southern U.S. It is really only a matter of time before Florida, Tampa, Atlanta, Phoenix and Carolina admit defeat as well. If you want to be honest about it, the NHL has been trying with much success to establish hockey in the southern U.S. since it granted franchises to the Los Angeles King and California Golden Seals in 1967. It’s been 40 years of trying without much, if any, success.
