New Deal for Sid the Kid
Apparently, Sidney Crosby and the Penguins could open discussions this summer about a new contract even though Sid the Kid still has a year left on his entry-level deal. The question is how much will Crosby and his agent, Pat Brisson, will demand from the Penguins? It’s not inconceivable that Crosby will ask for “max money” - or 20% of the Penguins’ payroll, which is what he can receive based on the last collective bargaining agreement. Of course, the Penguins may not want to give Crosby that much money given they’re under no obligation to give Crosby everything he wants for a few more years. At the same time, the Penguins have a bunch of other players, who will be looking for some more money as well. It’s not inconceivable that the Penguins will have no choice but to start trading some of their better younger players in the next four to five years as they grapple with the reality of balancing a budget with growing salary demands.
