Playing for Pride; Not Money

by Mark on May 13th, 2007

Canada won the World Championships today by defeating Finland. It’s a major accomplishment given Canada has been far from successful in the tournament. The players who have spent the three weeks playing for Canada after their teams didn’t make the players or bowed out early deserve huge kudos for their willingness to play for peanuts - they’ll receive about a $20,000 bonus from Hockey Canada for winning the tournament. Instead, they played for pride, country and the love of hockey. Of course, many of them can afford to do so. As well, Hockey Canada puts on a very good show for the players who do play. This includes flying over one relative, giving the players all kinds of schwag, and even bringing in Canadian beer!
