Politics and the Hamilton Blackberrys
With a provincial election in Ontario this October, the ruling Liberal party would like nothing better than to appear it supports the move of the Nashville Predators to Hamilton. What better way to curry favour with local voters than backing something like an NHL franchise.
The problem, however, is the government can’t be seen to be offering financial assistance given Jim Balsillie, who wants to buy the Predators for $238-million, is a billionaire. That will not play well with taxpayers.
The solution? According to the Toronto Star, Premier Dalton McGuinty has told Hamilton mayor Fred Eisenberger that any request for provincial money will have to come from the city rather than Balsillie.
That’s good politics but it still means taxpayers will have to cough up some dough if the Predators do move to Hamilton, which seems very unlikely at this time given Kansas City is such a better hockey market than hockey-mad Southern Ontario.
