Price Makes Canadiens Roster - Halak Demoted
So, young Carey Price has made the season-opening roster for the Montreal Canadiens. They are even calling him their goaltender of the future, whatever that means… He’s going to be backing up Cristobal Huet.
Price, the fifth overall pick in the 2005 draft, backstopped Canada to the gold medal at the most recent world junior championships. Price, a native of Williams Lake, B.C., will begin his first NHL season as the backup to veteran Cristobal Huet.
Joining Price in surviving the cut down to the 23-man roster limit set by the league were rookie centres Kyle Chipchura and Mikhail Grabovski.
Goalie Jaroslav Halak, defenceman Ryan O’Byrne and forward Maxim Lapierre did not make the team and were assigned to Hamilton of the AHL. All three players helped the Bulldogs to the Calder Cup title in the spring.
“I can’t say I was robbed — those are two good centres who made the team ahead of me,” said Lapierre, who played in 46 NHL games last season, registering six goals and six assists in a checking role.
Halak starred in the AHL last season before he was called up in the second half when Huet was injured. He went 10-6-0 with a 2.89 goals-against average in 16 NHL matches.
“It’s part of the game,” Halak said of his demotion. “Only two goalies can stay and I was the third one.”
Awww… I liked Halak! I hope this wasn’t a mistake.
