Russia Rallies to Beat Canada for Gold Medal
Team Russia rallied back from a 4-2 deficit heading into the third to beat Team Canada in the World Ice Hockey Championships, snapping a 15-year gold-medal drought.
The 5-4 victory came in overtime when Ilya Kovalchuk scored the winner on a powerplay with 2:42 gone in overtime. The goal was the result of a wrist shot launched from 25 feet out which beat Canadian netminder, Cam Ward.
The win ended Canada’s 17-game winning steak and dashed their hopes of becoming the first country to win the championships on home ice in 22 years.
Kovalchuk and Alexander Semin each scored twice and Alexei Tereshchenko scored once for the Russian team. Brent Burns scored twice while Chris Kunitz and Dany Heatley, with his tournament leading 12th goal, scored singles for Team Canada.
