Sundin Signs One-Year Deal

The Toronto Maple Leafs signed veteran Mats Sundin to a one-year, $5.5-million deal today.
The fact it’s only a one-year deal is, if anything, intriguing. It suggests Sundin may want to give himself an out if the Maple Leafs don’t improve from last year’s performance in which they missed the playoffs for the third-straight year.
If Sundin believes the Maple Leafs aren’t going to contend, he could demand a trade. The trade acquiring him wouldn’t be on the hook for anything other than the 2007/08 season. Another option is Sundin could leave as an unrestricted free-agent at the end of the 2007/08 season and pick the team of his choice.
This would be similar to what Teemu Selanne did when he left Colorado and signed with Anaheim two years ago.
