The Predator Fire Sale Begins
Looks like Craig Leipold is serious about cutting his losses and/or handing off a healthier balance sheet to potential new owner, Jim Balsillie. That’s the only way to look at the trade of Kimmo Timonen and Scott Hartnell to Philadelphia in return for a first-round draft pick. Timonen and Hartnell immediately signed long-term contracts worth about $6-million and $4-million a year respectively. Clearly, the Predators weren’t willing to re-sign either player, and you have to wonder what the future holds for other unrestricted free-agents such as Paul Kariy and Peter Forbsberg.
It looks like Leipod could become the next Jeffrey Loria, who gutted the Florida Marlins after they won the World Series. If the Predators appear to becoming a worse team over the summer, you have to wonder if fans in Nashville will be willing to buy tickets - something that would play right into Balsillie’s plan to move the team to Southern Ontario.
