Watch Out, the Flyers are Back!
It was only a few months ago that the Philadelphia Flyers capped off a terrible season that saw them trade Peter Forsberg and miss the playoffs for the first time in eons. It was not a good time in the City of Brotherly Love.
Today, Flyer fans have good reason to be optimistic following a flurry of trades and free-agent signings that have turned the team in a legitimate playoff contender.
The turnaround actually started when they traded Forsberg to Nashville just before the playoffs. In return, the team received Scott Upshall, prospect Ryan Parent, a first round pick and a third round pick. Philadephia also solved its goaltending woes by trading a second-round pick to Buffalo for Martin Biron.
After the season ended, the Flyers did another deal with Nashville - picking up unrestricted free-agents Kimmo Timonen and Scott Hartnell, to the Philadelphia Flyers for the first-round pick it dealt to Philadelphia in the Forsberg deal. That was a pretty solid start of the rebuilding process under Flyers’ general manager Paul Holmgrom, who replaced Bobby Clarke last season.
The Flyers didn’t stop there, however. Once the free-agent season kicked up on Sunday, they stepped up with a huge offer for slick centreman Daniel Briere, who agreed to a seven-year, $52-million contract. Briere, by the way, is really good friends with Martin Biron.
All in all, the Flyers are back - and it took them no time at all to do it.
