What’s Leipold Thinking?

by Mark on June 28th, 2007

According to reports, Nashville Predators owner Craig Leipold is about to spurn Jim Balsillie’s $238-million offer for the turn, and accept a deal worth $45-million less from another bid who wants to move the Predators to Kansas City.

If the NHL under Gary Bettman isn’t doomed already, this is yet another sign the NHL has no clue about how to do business. The obsession with making hockey work in the U.S. is becoming increasingly bizarre by the day.

The sooner the league wakes up to the fact hockey doesn’t work south of the border other than a few hotspots, the better it will be. That said, don’t expect this truth to dawn on the NHL until Bettman moves on to his next gig.

For more insight, check out the National Post’s Bruce Arthur, who suggests the only way that Balsillie’s going to become an NHL franchise owner is if some of the other owners step up and face down Bettman, who Arthurs mocks as “Napoleon”.
